Q: Too much antibiotics?!?
I had a staph infection in my arm. So the doc put me on cephalexin (Keflex). I took it for ten days, still a bit of infection. Put me on it for another 7 and the infection hadn’t cleared up. 5 more days in a last ditch effort before surgery. On the last day of taking them I get the chills and a fever of 103.5F with stomach cramps and diarrhea. I went to the doc the next day and he said it was an “allergic” reaction of some sort. I had figured it was psuedomembranous colitis like the possible side effects were listed on my prescription info. So the doctor prescribes me Prednisone and Lomatil for an allergic reaction and diarrhea. After two days taking lomatil 2.5mg every four hours and still having diarrhea I went back to the doctor. They finally ordered a stool sample to the lab, but want to prescribe me Bactrim DS, Flagyl 250mg, prevacid 30mg all for two weeks. I understand the Flagyl (Metronidazole) because it is the accepted treatment for pseudomembranous colitis, but the bactrim DS seems like a very risky one that is not necessary and may cause more problems than benifits. Any advice please
Yes, but two weeks on it. Won’t that put me at risk for kidney stones?
The doc prescribed me 800/160mg Bactrim. What does po bid x 2weeks mean? I know it means I have to take it two weeks, but does bid mean bi-daily?
A: Po Bid means take by mouth twice a day for two weeks. I would take it as your Doctor ordered and stay in touch with him. Call if you get another bout of temperature and diarrhea. Staff can be really hard to cure if it gets into your blood stream. Your Doctor is trying to prevent it from turning into MRSA. I remember one young man on Yahoo Answers who had been fighting it for 13 years. I am afraid you read the prescription, and did not get it filled, because had the druggest filled it, the instructions would have been on the bottle and on the print out.
