Q: Can anyone suggest the correct treatment & diet for a middleaged female suffering from Spasmodic Colitis ?
My mother has been suffering from severe Spasmodic Colitis since a few months. She is bed ridden. She is a thin person & on top of that she has lost more weight. She is now 27 kilos only!!!
You can well imagine how thin and weak she must be now. She also has low B.P. I have been nursing her. I have my final exams in a few days & i feel that i am not able to take proper care of her. But i am trying my best. I am so much tense & worried for her.

Please help me. If you can suggest some good remedies or anything please do.
She has gone to so many doctors. She has tried allopathy, homeopathy, Ayurveda with zero results.
Currently she is on new medications but the results are not very good or quick.

Please please please suggest some correct treatment or proper diet.
Thanks for your kind response.

A: First of all, I’m no expert on this. But spasmodic colitis sounds like a symptom, not a disease in itself. Has she ever been diagnosed with celiac disease, Crohn’s disease, or gluten intolerance? If not, you might try a gluten-free diet (many resources on the web). It is very hard to diagnose a gluten intolerance because it mimics a lot of other diseases. It would be quicker to try the gluten-free diet without going through the hassle of tests and diagnostics. That’s how a lot of people get diagnosed anyway.

Find some probiotics to supplement her diet – something like acidophilus. It restores natural flora to the gut if it’s depleted. It’s just a good idea to take one capsule every day anyway. It’s the bacteria from yogurt – it helps break down undigested food in your colon.

If she eats dairy, I would suggest that she stop that as well, at least until you find out what’s irritating her digestive system. Two common causes of indigestion are dairy intolerance and gluten intolerance. Best of luck to you both!

Q: Is there an antibiotic treatment for human colitis?
My dog has recurrent bouts of colitis. She has been on rounds of prednisone and amoxicillin several times. Is there a human treatment for this disease such as antibiotics or a drug that I might ask my vet about? She is so thin, but does seem to do better on the high-carb diet.

A: Of course there is as a matter a fact your dog has been taking almost what human take.
Humans can suffer coelaic I was wondering if animals can as well
If so then take his off all Wheat product including Pasta unless you can get hold of the pasta made with eggs???
Ask your vet is it possible a Animal can have coelaic disease.

Best of luck

Q: COLITIS HELP!!! What can I do to feel better? Alternative Medicine? remedies? medicine? treatments? diet?
I have had UC for almost 3 years, it came on very suddenly and it has changed my entire life style. I would like to hear from anyone who has this or Colitis, or Chron’s. I need help and understanding and what treatments other’s have tried or suggest. I’m at my wits end, and I want to return to my active lifestyle, but am exhausted, and if I eat, it just makes it worse. I’ve been to the Specialist, and he just gets me more pills, cortizone stuff which makes me feel even worse!! I am getting yeast now too from all this medication.

Any alternative treatments? I am not happy with the doctors I’ve seen, and I’ve had every test you can imagine, and they want to do another colonoscopy– which will make me very sick for 2 months!! HELP!!

Please answer if you have knowledge and can offer hope and help.
thank you in advance.
my im for yahoo is Mystic_Gift if we can chat, I will give you my email! thanks, Lilly
Anyone with any information about colitis,
or if you have already answered my questions, can you please edit and add more info.
what foods can you eat?
what foods do you avoid.

what is the best remedy you have found.
how do you live with colitis??

Help me with some websites.
thanks, please list websites for me to search.,

thank you for all your help.
I don’t know how to pick best answer you all have been so helpful!!
blessings!

A: 2 1/2 hours on this answer cause you were my angel with your wonderful answer which I will pick best when I was so upset yesterday. You sounded a professional counselor or a suicide prevention worker. It helped very much..bless you for you’re kindness. I was going to email you but you don’t have and so I looked at your questions.
I will do my best by you as I can. I went upstairs and got one book unfortunately loaned one out. I have studied alternative health for 29 years and herbs and nutrition..

1, get this book http://www.healthyhealing.com/product.esiml?PID=366 or if you absolutely can not if I have time I will get. I did get a scanner today but it is not installing right and I don’t know if scanned pages can be sent..maybe they can via email but I may have to wait till my son fixes as I don’t know how to fix.

2. Also I have a video tape series 12 hours. My sister in law has crohn’s which is very similar and I see her suffering but she does not listen to me.

3. I rememeber him talking on the tape about this woman with crohn’s or colitis..she had suffered burning diarrhea for many years and he said he “inverted her and put (this is serious) olive oil and aloe vera gel in her rectum via enemas and she signed and said ahhh and she smiled and said it was the first time in x number of years that she smiled as she was burned and the aloe put out (and soothed the fire).

I think he also put her on the incurables program but he did repeated enemas and I think she held as long as she could

(he had an underground clinic 20 years and mostly treated dying or very ill people many incurables and I know people with cancer who have been healed and I have first hand positive results myself and I do not think he is a quack.

He was trained by the naturopathic Bernard Jensen who wrote Many books and lied to be about 100 and the famous Dr John R Christopher (the originator of incurables program that Dr, Schulze turned up the intensity on having the belief he would push all the limits to put natural healing to the test. these 12 hour tapes have incredible testimonies and he has a book called there are no incurable illnesses

4. http://www.herbdoc.com/nhpbooks.asp and a good tape video is create your healing miracle.http://www.herbdoc.com/nhpav.asp. the save your life videos with Sam biser (and schultz often on ebay or amazon originally $400..fabulous worth every penny.

currently on sale so you can see what they look like if interested.

http://search.ebay.com/save-your-life-videos-sam-biser_W0QQfromZR41

http://www.amazon.com/gp/offer-listing/B0006RS3RE/sr=8-1/qid=1171264523/ref=sr_1_olp_1/002-3586094-2764001?ie=UTF8&s=books

5. Here is how to do the incurables program (not as good as videos explaining)..but still all steps are here for free or if getting the book $12.

I also think book above has the program or go here http://curezone.com/schulze/handbook/TNIP.asp
his formulas etc at herbdoc.com or see link below the only exception is if you have colitis do not take intestinal cleanse one as is usually recommended as one usually goes to the bathroom too much and does not need it..go right to intestinal cleanse number 2.and sdo not take intestinal cleanse one with it.

His best most potent formulas on the market see his website (home page for why..(see why my herbs are the absolute best)

6. http://herbdoc.com/p64.asp try for colitis (superfood and intestinal cleanse # 2.).if that does not work alone, do the one for chrohn’s which includes the incurables program. Also do the olive oil/aloe vera enamas or implants rectally.

9.Also go here and read all nine pages and any pages accessed as below.

http://curezone.com/forums/f.asp?f=63

http://www.curezone.com/ (go here and type colitis in right hand side google search and also in curezone forums in middle of page..review all posts..this is one of the best websites I know.

10. Finally in book food your miracle medicine a study showed page 433 and 434 it was an inflammatory disease crohn’s..I may be wrong but I think they are similar it is inflammatory and turmeric is an excellent anti inflammatory.

11. doctor found those that did successful diet have relapse less than 10% a year. more successful than meds according to Dr. hunter. foods most likely to induce crohn’s (sorry more on that than colitis) symptoms are wheat, dairy products, calciferous veggies (broccoli, cabbage, cauliflower, Brussels sprouts, radishes turnips, ), corn, yeast, tomatoes citrus fruit and eggs. So eliminate all these. Eating yeast proved bad (also avoid above foods)..adding a little yeast for a month stirred up more disease activity and flare ups. with low yeast diet, they improved dramatically in disease activity.

Worst flareups those with antibodies to yeast indicating immune or allergic response. Yeast is most noticeable in BREAD..abnormal immune response to certain foods fosters inflammation.

Also eat the antiinflammatory fatty fish (mackerel, salmon, herring, and sardines (not tuna much these have 7 or 8 times more,. Avoid pro inflammatory animal fats and omega 6 oils (like soyben, safflower, sunflowers, etc) This helps mute inflammation.

High sugar intake also linked to crohn’s

12. For your yeast infection, take a garlic clove and peel it.. Use a big one and thread a thread through it and knot as double string hanging down. Insert in vaginal. (I did this all the time and it never burned me)..leave it hours, if it isn’t helping bruise it next time (crush slightly)..if that isn’t enough, to increase intensity and healing, then cut two diagonal slits in garlic clove. It will not get lost –remove like tampon.

Also use yogurt, acidophilus milk, or bottled probiotics to replenish sufficient healthy bacteria but it will not be bad with garlic like chemical antibiotics which kill anything even good bacteria and which only kills 99% an that 1 % becomes a super-virus hard to kill with traditional antibiotics while garlic kills selectively (just the bad germs/viruses, not the healthy ones that are needed in the gut and vagina..that is why one get dirrahrea and yeast infections. since it kills the beneficial bacteria, one needs to replenish with lots of yogurt, acidophilus milk, and/or probiotics). Garlic and herbs which goes to root of cause, not just the symptoms which are sometimes labeled and called a disease.

This is supposed to cure a yeast infection..I don’t know..it did for me..yes, it did work and is safe. . If afraid (it always worked , I had no burning personally but I can’t guarantee results for everyone.

13, Take anti-inflammatory foods like apple, black currant, fish oil (mega three fatty ansers)garlic, ginger, onion, pineapple, sage

Food chemicals with anti inflammatory activity – capsicum (hot chili peppers), fatty fish (mackerel, herring, salmon, sardines) and quarcetin (onion) so eat a lot of these.

14 some foods contain chemicals that drain water out of the gut, solidify feces, and restrict intestinal tract constriction that push contents along

Such astringents include dried blueberries only dried fresh do not also cinnamon, fenugreek seeds, garlic, ginger, licorice (herb), nutmeg, rice, tea, and turmeric.
`
page 104-112 (pages on colitis, chrohns, and ibs. the juice lady’s guide to juicing for health by Cherie calbom (probably these books on ebay/amazon) is where this info came from

15 eliminate yeast, bacterial and parasitic infections these contribute to colitis and crohn’s,,bacterial LIKE SALMONELLA

a.Be tested fir disease causing organism.

b. If you have candidiasis see that page and parasites and infections (look online for herbs formulas that kill these 9MAYBE USE SOLOMON’S WICKEYS ANTI Candiditis diet and herb formula (look in open book site after you Google solomon wickey. Look up herbals cures for parasdites (black walnut tincture, pumkin seeds etc)

This is a lifestyle change.

16. Under diet recommends a high fiber low fat, low sugar diet..include high fiber foods like vegetables, fruit, whole grains except wheat, oat bran, guar gum, and psyllium avoid wheat

eliminate fat,

Avoid animal proteins as much as possible except for fish.

Avoid sugar in all forms like cakes, pie, ice cream, etc

Also aoid butter, margarine dairy products, fried foods, spicy foods, wheat products, all junk food like chips, candy, pop, and coffee..these encourage the secretion of intestinal mucus and prevent uptake of nutrients. for more info page 313 (i am sorry cant type that too as I am falling sleep no sleep in 48 hours..

17. Also drink plenty of fresh juice (from juicer) and water (reverse osmosis (u fill it at grocery store) and steam distilled tons of reasons why (sorry many pages can’t type all might have to get book at library/ebay but I hit all high points just miss why you do it but did list how to do it) especially carotene rich like carrot, kale, parsley, and spinach (I know yuk) this heals intestinal mucosa and give many nutrients

18 at least one guart water..also herb tea can meet the water requirement.

avoid caffeine and alcohol..if weak digestion use room temp drinks

19 if chrohns avoid all soft drinks as there is a connection. identify food allergies (often wheat, corn, dairy and stabilzer in processed foods, if no wheat use ruce and oat bran cereals. Can detect allergies via a elimination diet routine goihng after most common allergies first..

20. Do colon cleansing (intestinal cleanse 2 herbdoc.com) and juice fasting (fresh juiced/squeezed fruits and veggies (not canned and frozen and bottled except occasssionally) , herb teas and potassium broth see patient handbook above.

21. In additon to juices listed (carrot etc) focus on theze nutrients and also use chard, beet greens. watercress, mangoes, canteloupes, apricots, broccoli, and romaine lettuce. for beta carotene and chorophyle and also all dark green veggis for chlorophylle.

also glutamine –(most fruit/veggis juices)

omega three fatty acids– (fish oil, faty fish as above, flaxseed and hemp oils

vitamin c– (in order of effectiveness as above veggies were kale, parsley, broccoli, brussels sprouts, watercress, califlower, cabbage, strawberry, papaya, spinach, citris, turnips, mangoes, asparagus, and cantelopes.

22. herb for ulcerative colitis iare irish moss, slippery elm, and marshmellow root traditionally soothing. Avoid irish moss if allergic to caraggenan.

23. Juices (chrohns)– cabbage/daikon radish/ tomato (fresh)/parsley (homemade v 8 would be good, use veggies on label several are listed in these sugestion. Take the eight veggies (fresh) and juice them in a juicer like the juiceman or champion.

pear and carrot combo

23. drinks from juicing book–here are some juice combos listed for colitis

Q: Ulcerative Colitis ANYONE? Help with safe foods and diet!?
It’s been almost 3 years, and I have flare-ups at least every 3-4 weeks. I’m on Pentasa, the cortifoam, if you have it, you know the drill.

What are safe foods you can eat that keep you healthy and able to go about a normal life? What foods do you avoid??
**What vitimans or nutritional suppliments help?***
I have been tested for everything from gluten to lactose.
I cannot eat tomato, or oranges, or even the peels of an apple or any fruit. I have been on a very bland diet for the past 2 1/2 years, and this is so hard! Any foods that help or tear you up please list.

Any new medical treatments on the horizon?
(I have to go for another colonoscopy– that was all the doctor could do for me)
This is my 2nd GI and they just say everyone is different.

***PLEASE ANSWER IF YOU HAVE EXPERIENCE WITH ULCERATIVE COLITIS, COLITIS OR CHRON’S***
**please no mean or nasty remarks!**
This is a horrid problem and I’m looking for answers, and kindness
-Does UC ever go away?-is forever
Please share your treatment that your Doctor has given you!
Thank you for the information.
Any holistic remedies out there?

If you have Colitis, please IM me, so I can learn more.

I want to thank everyone for their answers, and all great ideas and suggestions and sharing your experience with me.
I just saw on tv www.STOPUC.com a new medical trial! i am going to look into it.

Again, thank you and please keep answering and adding information to my questions!

Colitis shouldn’t have to hurt this much!

A: Only you can determine your diet. Everyone is different what may be bad for me may be ok for you. I am really new to this disease, so my knowledge is limited. I am currently taking 3 fish oil pills a day, I eat and Activa yogurt everyday along with taking a pro biotic pill, and I eat 20 fresh or frozen blueberries a day. I also take ascol(sp). I can tell you that I noticed a big difference when I started taking fish oil (my doctor suggested it). I am not sure why the blueberries work, but my mom’s boyfriend has Chron’s and a nurse told him to eat them. I have noticed a difference since I started eating them.

I hope this is not forever, and it does sound like they are getting more treatments for it.

Good luck.

Q: Ulcerative colitis treatments?
I have ulcerative colitis in the last 20cm of the intestine (colon) and I’ve tried several different treatments including Asacol and salofalk drugs (pills, enemas etc), corticosteroids and azathioprine (Imuran), but it was no use, since the disease’s syptoms remain. So I would be grateful if someone who managed to control this illness could answer me and tell me in short what drugs he/she used and whether he/she followed a diet (and what kind of diet). I know that there is always the surgical solution but it is my last option.
As regarding the cortisone it was Medrol 16mg

A: a new drug infliximab an anti-inflammatory drug also used for treating crohn’s disease and rheumatoid arthritis is now used for ulcerative colitis
The medication is administered intravenously, with an initial regimen of three doses of infliximab, followed by maintenance infusions every eight weeks. Nearly 70 percent of patients receiving the drug experienced clinical response and remission early in the trial, and nearly all had significant results after one year of therapy.
consult ur DOC for this
all the best

Q: Radiation Colitis anyone?
haha just when all of the regulars in the cancer section think they’ve gotten rid of me…lol. I have been told today that I am cancer free :) No more cervical cancer, but of course I am going to be very conscious of every little thing and not ignore the little signs like in the past.

Just wondering, now that I am done worrying about cancer every minute of the day, has anyone else experienced Radiation Colitis from treatment?

My doctor thinks I have it but I will probably know a little more after my doc appt. next friday. My scan showed a little inflammation in my colon but I already knew I had issues and so did my docs. My stomach/digestive system has been a mess since week 5 of the radiation.

I lost a lot of weight from treatment but gained 20 back, now I am a very healthy weight. I cannot eat anything greasy, spicy, fatty, no alcohol, no acidic drinks like sodas and orange juice…

I was throwing up here and there from atypical acid reflux, but Prilosec has taken care of that pretty well.

So has anyone else dealt with Radiation Colitis? Is there anything that helps you? My stomach pretty much just feels a little sickly all the time, gurgly, and just not so good. But trust me I am not complaining it beats cancer anyday!

Just wondering if theres anything I can do to help myself any more than eating a healthy diet.

Advice?

Thanks.
Thanks Panda~

They don’t seem to get answers back to me as quickly as Y!A but its still been helpful to me.

And I like a lot of the people here so I sort of get stuck on here for hours…you know how you sort of get a little circle on Y!A.. anyways thanks again.

A: Im v. familiar with this unfortunately! THere is not a lot you can do but we still have loperamide every day though Im not convinced it actually does anything to help. Have also had more luck with Welchol which is actually approved for cholesterol lowering indication but has been used to treat Chrohns/colitis patients who have chronic diarrhea. It really works great for some people so worth a try. its newly being prescribed for colitis.

Also- have all your stool proteins tested including you pancreatic enzymes. You may want to get an endoscopy /colonoscopy again and they can take small tissue samples. It is a long long process of slowly ruling things out but keep at it and you will get to the best balance you can. You will figure out your trigger foods. Some people also try adding back in probiotics like lactobacillis. For many its a combo of Rx drugs and diet and probiotics. Lots of times avoiding sugar/gluten can help too. Its a combination as I said and it may take several months/a year to get there. I have seen it take patients 2-3 years to get ato a point where they can manage it best. As with all medically related things- talk to your doctor before trying new things:) Good luck!

Q: Cure Colitis naturally?
I’ve had Ulcerative Colitis for years and am trying a natural approach that includes diet (no dairy except goat products, nothing processed, only fish as far as meat, lots of veggies, some fruits, good fats (extra virgin olive oil, avocado) ect.)

I’ve also heard some particular foods: coconut water, papaya, flax oil, prim rose oil, peppermint tea, ect, are especially helpful.

I want to use Meditation to control stress, visualization to stimulate healing, hypnosis to help with dealing with colitis attacks, and regular exercise. (Three times a week, wraps, strength training, and kick boxing, with some biking in between days.)

Has anyone else tried this with positive results?

I’ve had UC for ten years now so I know all the basic info. I’ve heard and read countless approaches and tried them as well.
I’m not knocking anyone else’s ideas of treatments; I’m just looking for people who are trying an all natural approach right now.

Thanks!

Q: Our 3 year old Yorkie has colitis?
according to his vet…it causes him to have blood & mucous in his stool.
but he’s not on any meds…

I’ve put him on a low fiber diet of lamb & rice canned food which I mix with mashed banana. This has helped but not healed the condition.

Any ideas for treatment will be appreciated.

He’s a sweetheart & we feel bad for him as he must have belly aches or cramping from this I would think

This only began about a month ago. He’s been tested & it isn’t worms.

He’s otherwise healthy & happy & has a good appetite…any dog who’ll eat banana would have to, huh?

Many thanks from Winston’s family…

A: Hi. I had a Police Dog that developed Colitis. It manifested itself by a sort of slime over the stools. My vet put her on Salazapirin and a diet of Chappie and All-Bran (This goes against the low fibre diet that you are feeding.) All-Bran is a bulk builder when given in the right quantity.
Once the diet and medication was sorted out she went on to have a very active and productive Police Life. This is all recounted in Ted Wrights book “One Dog and Her Man” The Life of Police Dog Bess. I wish you good luck with your Yorkie.

Q: Lymphotic Colitis; Interstitial Cystitis; and many more…?
Hi, I’m only 22 and last year I was diagnosed with Lymphatic colitis (LC) and three months ago diagnosed with Interstitial Cystitis (IC). I’m mostly just wondering if anyone else has these diseases and how they deal with them. I’ve been to two gastroenterologists for my LC and both have said that imp the youngest case they have ever seen. They have put me on so many medications (for trial and error reasons) but so far none have seemed to make any progress.
As far as my IC goes, they have been giving me injections that only seem to be a three day max cure. The rest of the time I can’t have intercourse with my husband and am on an extremely strict diet that makes me feel very unhealthy and has caused me to gain almost 40 pounds. I went from being an extremely skinny all my life double zero size 1 97 pounds girl at age 21 to a 135 size 4 before I turned 22. This last week I halted my treatments after deciding they weren’t doing anything and was finally able to force “IC is not curable
and your treatments aren’t doing much for you” out of my doctors nurse. Elmiron has given me every single side effect listed plus many that weren’t (i.e. bloody stools/ urine, extreme nausea/ exhaustion etc.); they just decided that I may be allergic. Last week I went to an urologist who pretty much told me the same thing.
I’m just sick of doctors because for the past 2 years I’ve been going at least twice a week and haven’t been able to keep a job because of my constant absences and my frequent bathroom breaks. I also haven’t been able to exercise nearly as much as I used to- lately everything hurts a lot; especially in my knees when walking fast, lifting, running, etc. Now I’m afraid that I might be getting something else that the nurse practioner has told me before that usually goes hand and hand with IC. I wish I could remember the name of it but it was basically extreme pain located above and below your joints but not on them. I’m just getting extremely frustrated because nothin
seems to be helping either of these diseases and it has really just put a damper on my life and has inadvertently affected my marriage.
If there as anyone that has or knows how to really live or cope with either one of these diseases, please, I need all the information I can get. Thank you.

A: i hear it’s painful….

i hear there are some instilling treatments they can put in your bladder… sounds miserable but i hear it can help

i also hear their are pelvic floor physical therapist that can do massage, ultrasound and other ‘fun’ treatments that can help …

otherwise, I’m not sure….

Q: I have been diagnosed w/ cronic collagenosis colitis.I feel alone in this world,is there anyone livin w. this?
last november i was diagnosed with this disease.n have went from 180-120.i am going to IU medical treatment center since my specialist says there is nothing else he can do.no meds.I go in Feb. n i have to rely on IVS,to keep me going.is there anyone living with this rare disease,as he said it is. n can someone offer me some guidens on how to control it.i am on a diet of course, but still feel very ill.

A: Hi, you are not alone. I also have had it, mine was triggered by NSAIDS taken for joint pain d/t celiac (yet another autoimmune disease). (rah.)
Have you been through the full gamut of Crohn’s meds? (Colazol, Entocort, prednizone, asacol, etc.both tabs and enemas) then the rounds of antibiotics (e.g.Cipro see GI studies from Japan on E-Coli and collagenous colitis) and the combinations and still no relief? I don’t understand why your doctor is saying there are no meds. I have had just about all of them in one form of cocktail or another and it finally got mine under control.
Have you had Imuran and still no relief? Wow!
Go here:

http://digestive.niddk.nih.gov/ddiseases/pubs/collagenouscolitis/

Now I just avoid all NSAIDS and I am ok. Have you tried the specific carb diet?Have you seen an allergist? You need to have all potential food intolerances and allergies looked into/tested. A lot of people have had luck with that, and I think you should look into it.
You need to hang on our support site. Go here:

http://www.perskyfarms.com/phpBB2/index.php

Anyway, if you want to chat and you need support, write back! There are a few of us on this forum that are more than happy to help.
Hang in there! You can fight this!!!

And “Dr. J” Celiac is NOT an allergy, it is an AUTOIMMUNE disease like diabetes, Crohn’s, Lupus, Collagenous colitis. If you are a celiac, you should know better than to say that it is an allergy/histamine reaction. It is wayyy more than an allergy!

Q: Dieticians – Internists – Is kwashiorkor a possible symptom of our poor diet – too much white flour / corn syr?
I think many Americans are starving themselves because of their daily reliance on white flour for sustenance, whether rich or poor. Does white flour inhibit good digestion of other more protein rich foods? (Look at all the protruding bellies.) I’m looking at something that indicated that in a report as follows:

“Conditions listing Kwashiorkor as a symptom may also be potential underlying causes of Kwashiorkor. Our database lists the following as having Kwashiorkor as a symptom of that condition:

Protein-calorie malnutrition: Causes and incidence
(Professional Guide to Diseases (Eighth Edition))
Both kwashiorkor (edematous PCM) and marasmus (nonedematous PCM) are common in underdeveloped countries and in areas in which dietary amino acid
content is insufficient to satisfy growth requirements. Kwashiorkor typically occurs at about age 1, after infants are weaned from breast milk to a protein-deficient diet of starchy gruels or sugar water, but it can develop at any time during the formative years. Marasmus affects infants ages 6 to 18 months as a result of breast-feeding failure, or a debilitating condition such as chronic diarrhea.
In industrialized countries, PCM may occur secondary to chronic metabolic disease that decreases protein and calorie intake or absorption, or trauma that increases protein and calorie requirements. In the United States, PCM is estimated to occur to some extent in 50% of elderly people in nursing homes. Those who aren’t allowed anything by mouth for an extended period are at high risk of developing PCM. Conditions that increase protein-calorie requirements include severe burns and injuries, systemic infections, and cancer (accounts for the largest group of hospitalized patients with PCM). Conditions that cause defective utilization of nutrients include malabsorption syndrome, short-bowel syndrome, and Crohn’s disease.
Protein-calorie malnutrition: Causes
(Handbook of Diseases)
Both marasmus (nonedematous protein-calorie malnutrition) and kwashiorkor (edematous protein-calorie malnutrition) are common in underdeveloped countries and in areas where dietary amino acid content is insufficient to satisfy growth requirements. Kwashiorkor typically occurs at about age 1, after infants are weaned from breast milk to a protein-deficient diet of starchy gruels or sugar water, but it can develop at any time during the formative years. A: Interesting read and yes, you have a valid point there.
I believe when manufactures add or take products out to produce a longer shelf life, we become unwittingly victims.
I also will state that man’s desire to consume these products in large quantities also makes a statement to how well they care about their own bodies and therefore allowing them to become the blimps, encourage laziness and less outgoing as a person.
I find these chemicals are foreign to the human body and instead of helping ones digestion, actually does the opposite. It promotes build up and therefore a blockage to the body operating normally.
There is where the many problems of the body lies in wait for us. Some times quicker then we ever could realize.
It is sad that many of these traits are passed on during breast feeding and actual Development inside a mother’s womb. However i wonder if this wasn’t all a design by human engineering to cause a decrease in the human population or is it just a consequence of a “on Demand” society.
I learned a lot about nutritional values when i searched out about diets for myself. There are some products now that i will never eat again
Great question and deserving my further attention as well as others.

Q: Info for Crohn’s patients & their family?
The Crohn’s & Colitis Foundation of America has a website that you obtain information ranging from the latest treatments, diet, surgery, women’s issues, to locating a local chapter near your town. These support chapters offer educational meetings (drug reps, dieticians, MDs)as well as regular support for pts. & their families led by healthcare professionals.

CCFA also has an online chat M-F as well as a toll free number where you can talk to a healthcare expert well versed in IBD. www.ccfa.org.

You are not alone. I’ve been a crohn’s vetran since the age of 12 & have seen firsthand how their expertise has made it possible for myself as well as countless others learn how to take control of the disease & not let it take controlof us.

Wishing all crohnies a complete remission. :)

A: I completely agree. I have struggled with Crohn’s disease since age 8. The CCFA (formerly NFIC) has been my best resource for information and networking with patients and physicians for about 25 years. Find a group near you and share your frustrations – AND your joys!

Q: What can I do about my Iron levels?
I’m always anemic.I have Ulcerative colitis & so I bleed, but not all the time, so I don’t understand why I get anemic even when my colitis isn’t too bad. (Though my period is always early & heavy). I can’t take ferrous sulphate because it makes me constipated exacerbating my colitis. I eat a balanced diet, including apricots, sprouts, spinach,& liver but my body doesn’t absorb the iron. I just had another course of Iron infusions, but I still feel anemic & I’m not due for a blood test until March 6 by which time I shall be even worse, then I’ll have to wait another 2weeks while the hospital sort out the paperwork etc & set up the appointments. They’re so useless, I’m sure the treatments didn’t have any effect this time because they mucked up with my appointments-I had one infusion 15 December, the next was a month later, followed by 1 a week for 3 weeks thats 5. On previous occasions I’ve had 6 infusions-1 a week. How can I avoid this shambles &stop myself getting such low iron levels

A: Have you try another approach? Use acid and alkaline diet. I read the book on pH Miracle for Diabetes and it works. While many like me thought that diabetes is about sugar, drinking supergreens (an alkaline drink made from vegetable extract) help to keep the sugar level in the blood down.

The acid alkaline diet also helps my friend with hypo-thyroidism (excessive iodine) to control the problem.

Q: medical question?
Ulceractive colitis is the diagnosis.Traditional medication is not helping much.Any information on herbal treatment and more importantly information on diet to improve situation

A: Eating a healthy diet is always the best. Fruits , Veggies, Protein. Drink Water. Alcohol may not be a good idea. ( Sorry) Stay away from sugar, including white bread and white flour products, no milk products, except yogurt, it has those active good bacteria you need for intestinal health. No nuts, or popcorn. Chicken is the easily digested protein source. Take your meds, get some walking in and I think thats the best advice I can give. Hope that helps a little.

Q: Can homeopethic cure it?
I was recently diagnosed with Ulcerative Colitis and my doctor said there is no cure for this disease and the symptoms can only be relieved by good diet and medicines. I want to know if there is any treatment in homeopathich?? thnx for any info

A: http://www.phpure.com/nutrition_products/angstrom_minerals.htm
Go to that website and look thru the middle of the pages for the links that give you symptoms of your condition under each mineral.

Believe me there is help and medicine only makes other side effects later… but there is a pill for that as well. You also probably need to follow a gluten free diet for 6 months to clean up your system. (celiac diet )
